Hampton Senior Returns from Job Interview

By: Matthew A. White

HAMPTON- Senior Broadcast Journalism Major Anneette Peagler just returend from a promising job interview with the Scripps TV Networks.

"This is a once in a lifetime oppotunity," said Peagler. "I've been blessed to be considered for this prestigious program. If I'm selected I'll spend the next two years in Cincinnati."

The Apprenticeship Program is a salary paying position that explores every aspect of the news for the first year, web, photography, reporting and media sales. After that initial year in the program, participants will be placed in a position for one year. Upon completeing the program Scripps will assign the reporter to a Scripps affiliate TV station.

This program is designed by the Scripps corporate office to fast track young promising reporters to the newsroom and give them a quick start into the industry.

"Scripps paid to fly me to Cincinnati, where I met with seven department heads who went over my resume, package tape and looked at the work that I had completed the yaer before at my previous internship at WCPO -TV," said Peagler.

If selected Peagler will be another success story that has come out of the 10 year, 15 million dollar partnership between Hampton University and the Scripps Howard Foundation, which is committed to developing minority journalists.

Common Finds Forever at HU

By Matthew White

HAMPTON- The Hampton University Convocation Center was rocked last Saturday night as Chicago based Hip-hop artist Common closed out HU's Springfest Week.

Following on the success of his latest release Finding Forever, Common played a melody of some of his recent hits as well as some music from earlier albums Like Water for Chocolate, Electric Circus and Be. The album debuted at the number one on the Billboard 200, selling 155,000 units in the first week, becoming Common's first chart-topper. Selling over 500,000 units in the US, it has been certified Gold.

"Common without a doubt killed it," said Luther Quarels, a senior Biology major from Jacksonville, Florida. "This show showed what real hip-hop is. It has a message and isn't all about cars, rims and money. It's sad artists like Common don't get the same kind of media attention like 50 Cent."

Known for his positive messages in his music, students were pleased by the positive message brought by the Chicago born M.C. Common was a great choice to close out Springfest as many visiting High School students were in town for Hampton University's annual High School Day.

"This was an event that I had to be at," said Marissa Morgan, a high school sophomore in town for High School Day. "Even though I'm not to familiar with his early work, I love his most recent stuff and love what he talks about."

Common is also known to be very vocal with his political beliefs and stances. He took his time on stage to express how he felt about several topics that mean a lot to him. One of those was how privileged he felt to be performing at a HBCU. He also expressed how important it is for African-Americans to be involved with the upcoming election. As well as the importance of education and making an impact towards the future.

Look for Invincible Summer, a new EP from Common in July. It will serve as a preview to Common's upcoming album The Believer, to be released in November of this year. You can also look for Common in the new major motion picture Street Kings, featuring Keanu Reeves, The Game and Cedric the Entertainer, in theaters now.

It appears that the FCC will allow the merger of the only to satellite radio companys. Everyday this field is changing and evolving. Even on The Simpsons they mention that. Nelson the class bully did his trademark..HAHA at a print journalist and said "your media is dieing." Thats crazy!! Who knows what this merger will mean for regular radio. This is something to keep an eye on as more things unfold.

Spring Break to Nowhere

While all of my friends are in Miami or Vegas or home... Im wasting away in Hampton, VA. There is a snowballs chance in hell that I may wind up in Miami myself, however im not holding my breath as it appears that chance in melting under Satan's foot. What really bothers me the most is that in my 5 college years Ive haven't had a spring break. I remember in high school watching MTv's spring break and planning on going somewhere. However because of my job with school i have not yet gone anywhere. And this my senior year it looks that it will remain the same......*pout* insert sad face here*

Really....This is dispicable

This is another example of where people are being unfair and unjust because of religious obligations. People in Colorado should be rasiing more attention to this issue!!!

DENVER (AP) -- State senators have taken up the cause of a Jewish boys basketball team whose playoff run may be halted because its players can't play on the Jewish Sabbath.

The Herzl/Rocky Mountain Hebrew Academy team could be headed for a regional championship on Saturday, March 8, if it wins one more game. But the Denver team's religious beliefs prohibit students from playing on the Jewish Sabbath between sundown Friday and sundown Saturday.

If Herzl/RMHA makes it to the regional championship and refuses to play a Saturday game, another school would be chosen to take its place, CHSAA commissioner Bill Reader said.

Earlier this month, the Colorado High School Activities Association, which governs sports and other high school activities, rejected the team's request for a schedule change.

At the end of morning debate in the state Senate on Wednesday, Majority Leader Ken Gordon, D-Denver, called on the CHSAA to be more flexible.

Senate President Peter Groff, D-Denver, said the CHSAA's decision was ironic because it has a rule barring games from being played on Sunday for religious reasons.

Sen. Tom Wiens, R-Sedalia, said there must be a way for the CHSAA to accommodate the team.

"It just seems like the bureaucracy has run amok here," Wiens said.

Bruce H. DeBoskey, mountain states regional director for the Anti-Defamation League, said the group was disappointed by CHSAA's decision.

Prayers to P.G.

Minus my own personal feelings to the state of Maryland. My hearts and prayers go out to the families of the bus driver and 44 students who were on the school bus that tipped this morning in P. G. County Maryland. Early reports said the kids were fine, but Im sure all the people involved are shacken up. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

20 Million Dollar Man!!!

According to Boxing champion Floyd Mayweater he's receiving a 20 million dollar pay day to appear at the WWE Wrestlemania PPV next month. Talk about showing him the money. Floyd will be taking on the Big Show, a man who weighs twice the size of him. Well see if the money is worth the fight for floyd.

You gotta becareful what u put online these day...

I cant believe the mayor of Oregon lost her job because she took some semi "racy" pics and posted them on Myspace. In a world that is becoming smaller and smaller due to the internet people have to be aware of what they put out. More and more we are learning that there is no more time for privacy, when it comes to public officials.

The maddness is slowly approaching

Fans of College Basketball are starting to get that itch. Get your brackets out and get ready to pick your Cinderella cause the NCAA tournament is almost here. Websites like Facebook.com are getting into the madness by offering members contests by trying their luck with picking the right team in the big dance all the way to the Final Four. For those few who have no idea about the March Madness check out www.espn.com and you can already see the projected NCAA tourney seeds.

The Next President of the US?

As we inch closer to Super Tuesday in Texas and Ohio could one of these two be the next President? Not to disrespect Republican nominee John McCain, but the Democrats are pushing a White woman and a Black man as our top representatives. Its cliche to say that times may be changing but I really think that's what happening. I hope everyone out their Republican or Democrat is going to be active in this years election.

Is this really the end??

According to published reports this will be the end of an era. For kids born in the mid 1980's the end of an era has come. This years pair of the Air Jordan's shoes will be it, over fineto!! For kids growing up these shoes represented the pinnacle of basketball and everyone wanted a pair. Lets look back fondly at the days when "j's" were the greatest thing going..

Does this lil guy look familar??

is it me or does Disney's newest character Wall*E look a lot of Johnny 5 from Short Circuit???

More and more these days i feel like the 1980's are just replaying themselves over and over. Its gotten to the point were the "creative minds" at a powerhouse like Disney are rehashing ideas from yesteryear. Be sure to checkout the official movie website to get the full Wall*E affect. despite my better judgment, Ill see this movie based on the fact it's a Disney film and I love all things Disney. http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/walle/

A Weekend of Love

This weekend was supposed to a be a weekend of fun and excitement at the Alpha Cab at Love however it ended with some fool hitting my car.

www.lovetheclub.com

Don't get me wrong, the party was awesome, however the damage to my car dampened the whole weekend. According to percetages hit and runs are a leading killer in the US. Luckily for me i was not in the car when it was hit.
